Steg-G (producer) & The Freestyle Master (emcee / rapper) have been hard at work in the studio recording a new LP which is scheduled for an Autumn release, with the first single double A-side "Cool ‘/ ‘Big Bad City’ ready to be launched to the public in July 2009. The as yet untitled album will show the evolution of this duo as progressive artists more than any before, fusing many modern styles of music into one synthesised extravaganza as they take it back to their roots in Hip Hop, and create music which can be danced to or pondered over. They can be heard on the airwaves most days as presenters on Glasgow radio station Sunny Govan Community Radio, where their humour and knowledge of music is highly evident with their shows rivalling the major commercial stations listening figures in the west coast of Scotland. They are also highly influential within the community through their youth workshops where they tutor disadvantaged youths in the arts of Hip Hop culture in a bid to give disenfranchised inner city youths an outlet for their frustrations in an attempt to dissolve the gang culture of Glasgow. Steg & Freestyle are a duo from Glasgow's notorious south-side schemes who discovered Hip Hop culture through the art of Breakdancing in the mid-eighties. Whilst in primary school Steg & Freestyle quickly began upstaging their peers through more than break-dance moves when they began making home demos with nothing but a turntable, a tape deck and a pair of headphones doubling up as the microphone. Over the past decade they have released various material (‘But We’re Different’ as a 12” single through ‘Devil Discs’ and EPs ‘The Next Level’ and ‘Mindgames’ through ‘U.S.T’) sending a huge buzz across this Hip Hop community, as this was the first time a Scottish vocal had been heard in Rap music. The lead single ‘It’s Fresh’ from ‘Mindgames’ was play listed on Tim Westwood’s Radio 1 Rap Show. Along came attention from legendary Lenny Kravitz who expressed interest in signing them to a label venture in USA, and although it never came to pass, it filled the pair with confidence about their potential, leading to the set up of their own label POWERCUT PRODUCTIONS. Releases followed in the form of LP ‘The Journey’ which was described as ‘an album that will go down in the annals of hip hop history’ by HIP HOP CONNECTION, who devoted a two page spread to them, followed by the EP ‘Universal,’ which was play listed by Steve Lamacq on his previous Radio 1 show ‘The Evening Session.’ Another legend also professing his love of their music was legendary Radio 1 host John Peel, who sent them a hand written letter and proceeded to play their music on his show religiously for the following months. UK press began to take notice and they were featured in The Mirror, DJ Mag, Mixmag to name a few and gained huge coverage in the Scottish press leading to a feature on BBC 2 programme ‘The Beat Room’. In 2003 they released ‘Brainwaves’ / ‘Hustle 2003’ with Damaged Goods and Beejay, which went on to be named in the top three records of that year by Radio 1's Evening Session and saw them perform the first of many live sessions for the station, as well as tour with XZIBIT on the UK leg of his world tour. The album ‘Clyde-Built’ was then released, with lead single ‘Trouble Maker’ performed live on the BBC 1Xtra Homegrown show. Freestyle soon returned to BBC studios to be crowned ‘UK Battle Rap Champion 2004’ defeating all other competitors over a weekend broadcast live on Ras Kwame’s show. Their most successful release to date, ‘Natural Selection,’ found them being approached by 1Xtra to perform at the annual Homegrown weekender. Station bosses were so taken with the lead single ‘Anti Social Behaviour’ that they used the song as their "theme tune" for the event. The flipside of the record, ‘Temptation’ was described as ‘the greatest rap song ever recorded’ by Daily Record. Ever growing was their reputation for putting on one of the best hip-hop shows anywhere...period! With Freestyle’s jaw dropping, off the dome rhyming abilities giving the shows a truly spontaneous atmosphere, as well as his remarkable stage presence ably backed up by Steg’s masterful control of the turntable, the duo found themselves being booked and sought after by the biggest promoters in the business. This consolidated after receiving huge plaudits from pioneering legendary figures they supported including RUN-DMC, SUGARHILL GANG, GRANDMASTER FLASH, AFRIKA BAAMBAATA and KOOL DJ HERC. They then moved into the realms of 10-20,000 capacity arena concerts with performances alongside acts like Eminem, Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent and Black Eyed Peas and at major festivals including T In The Park. They were then picked up by sportswear giants Adidas and Reebok to perform at ‘Adidas Streetball Championships’ and ‘Reebok Sofa Games’ where they were used in the advertising campaign and respective concerts. Around this time, Steg also contributed musical turntable theatrics for Coors Lager worldwide ad campaign for their newly launched brand Coors Ice! This duo are proof that hard work and self belief can get you everywhere as long as you believe in oneself. This year they’re ready to raise their profile even higher and do what they do best...keep bringing you quality hip-hop! Freestyle will be performing at Kelburn Garden Party, nr Largs on June 20. www.powercutproductions.com / www.myspace.com/freestylemaster1 / www.myspace.com/steg-g
